Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE)

At St. Hugh’s, we believe that PSHE helps children to develop the knowledge and skills they need to deal with the many opportunities, challenges and responsibilities they will face as they become adults. It is central to their overall success and can enhance achievement in all areas of school life and beyond. By teaching children to stay safe and healthy; to have good self-esteem; to be resilient and empathetic, we can help all our children to grow into strong, independent and well-balanced adults.

The National Curriculum 2014 states that ‘all schools should make provision for personal, social, health and economic education’. PSHE enables schools to provide a balanced and broadly-based curriculum which develops children’s behaviour, welfare and ability to safeguard themselves.

We have designed our own PSHE curriculum to reflect the needs of the children, families and communities we serve. We have based it around three key themes:

  • Health and wellbeing
  • Relationships
  • Living in the wider world.

PSHE is taught in a variety of ways at St. Hugh’s:

  • Discrete lessons
  • Learning opportunities through other subjects
  • Learning opportunities through the life of the school and the wider community
  • Catholic ethos
  • Assemblies
  • Themed days or weeks
  • Visiting speakers
  • Visits outside school
